Events / Conservation work (26 October). Upgang Ravine.
« Last post by David Minter on March 08, 2017, 01:33:08 pm »
Conservation work in Upgang Ravine. Exact meeting point, Thursday 26 October, 10.00 a.m. Notes. Cutting and raking the grassland over the past 4 years has resulted in clear improvement of the special flora and insects of this bank. The results have been very rewarding, with the rarer species thriving, and plants such as early purple orchids appearing in the cleared margins. Please bring tools (rake, shears, pruners) and gardening gloves. Refreshments are also recommended. The bank is steep and uneven, so bring suitable footwear.  Cars can be parked at the end of Upgang Lane [NZ883119] or brought into the Ravine using the access road by the golf course on Sandsend Road down the Cleveland Way. It would be useful to know if you plan to come, and what tools you can bring. Contact. Wendy English [plants<at>whitbynaturalists.co.uk].

News and Announcements / Results of the Club's 2016 Photographic Competition
« Last post by David Minter on February 05, 2017, 03:19:46 pm »
Sixteen photographs were shortlisted from more than sixty submitted for the 2016 competition. A4-size prints of the shortlisted photographs were exhibited at the Club's 2016 AGM, and were evaluated by a panel of three judges. The winning photograph, taken by Jane Ellis,  portrayed Club Members examining moss in the field during last year's Sphagnum Workshop. The best junior entry, taken by Daniel Hatchwell, was of a midwife toad carrying its eggs. A slideshow of all submitted photographs was projected at the AGM.

News and Announcements / Autumn 2016 weather
« Last post by Peter Wallace on December 12, 2016, 08:21:25 pm »
Autumn 2016 was warmer and dryer than usual with about average sunshine.
Although November was colder than normal, this was more than compensated for by the warm conditions in September and October. Rainfall in November was above normal, but the dry conditions during September and October meant that overall the autumnal rainfall total was well short of the 30 year average of 188mm.
Soil temperatures were also well above normal - at 30cm depth, the mean of 11.9C was 0.9 higher than average.
