Events / Conservation work (12 December). Calla Pond
« Last post by David Minter on December 09, 2017, 10:51:59 am »
Leader. Wendy English (Whitby Naturalists). Place. Access track to Calla Pond at Spital Bridge [NZ901103]. Date. 12 December 2017. Time. 10:00. Notes. The pond has been good for amphibians and dragonflies, but is infested with the invasive New Zealand pygmyweed, and is getting overgrown with reed mace. It is extremely difficult to eradicate NZ pygmyweed, but we hope to prevent it from entirely smothering the pond by annual removal. The work we did last year appears to have had some positive effect. It will be necessary to remove some undergrowth from around the pond to access the edge. We then intend to remove pygmyweed and put it in open black bags overnight to allow any creatures to escape back to the pond. Any reed mace we can extract will be left in a pile to compost near the pond. Wear wellies, and protective gloves. A hot drink is recommended.  A garden spade or fork may be useful, but tools will be available. A volunteer with a wheelbarrow is also needed for Wednesday 13th December to transport the bags of NZ pygmyweed down to the entrance, where they will be taken away by Scarborough Borough Council.

« Last post by David Minter on February 05, 2017, 03:19:46 pm »
Sixteen photographs were shortlisted from more than sixty submitted for the 2016 competition. A4-size prints of the shortlisted photographs were exhibited at the Club's 2016 AGM, and were evaluated by a panel of three judges. The winning photograph, taken by Jane Ellis,  portrayed Club Members examining moss in the field during last year's Sphagnum Workshop. The best junior entry, taken by Daniel Hatchwell, was of a midwife toad carrying its eggs. A slideshow of all submitted photographs was projected at the AGM.

News and Announcements / Autumn 2016 weather
« Last post by Peter Wallace on December 12, 2016, 08:21:25 pm »
Autumn 2016 was warmer and dryer than usual with about average sunshine.
Although November was colder than normal, this was more than compensated for by the warm conditions in September and October. Rainfall in November was above normal, but the dry conditions during September and October meant that overall the autumnal rainfall total was well short of the 30 year average of 188mm.
Soil temperatures were also well above normal - at 30cm depth, the mean of 11.9C was 0.9 higher than average.
