Sixteen photographs were shortlisted from more than sixty submitted for the 2016 competition. A4-size prints of the shortlisted photographs were exhibited at the Club's 2016 AGM, and were evaluated by a panel of three judges. The winning photograph, taken by Jane Ellis,  portrayed Club Members examining moss in the field during last year's Sphagnum Workshop. The best junior entry, taken by Daniel Hatchwell, was of a midwife toad carrying its eggs. A slideshow of all submitted photographs was projected at the AGM.
Events / Workshop. Molecular techniques. Saturday 14 - Sunday 15 October 2017.

Leaders. Paul Cannon & Brian Douglas (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew). Place. Whitby Museum, Normanby Room. Date. 14-15 October 2017. Time. 09.30 on 14 October. Notes. In the past, use of DNA for identification has been the stuff of television crime thrillers and the domain of well-funded laboratories, but in the last couple of years the price of kits has fallen so much that DNA amplification (the first stage in the process) is now just within reach of the determined amateur. The leaders will introduce participants to DNA amplification using equipment suitable for resourceful amateur naturalists and local natural history societies. They will also give guidance on how to get DNA amplified material sequenced. More details to follow. Places very limited. Booking essential. Information about booking also to follow. Contact. David Minter [fungi<at>].
News and Announcements / Autumn 2016 weather
« Last post by Peter Wallace on December 12, 2016, 08:21:25 pm »
Autumn 2016 was warmer and dryer than usual with about average sunshine.
Although November was colder than normal, this was more than compensated for by the warm conditions in September and October. Rainfall in November was above normal, but the dry conditions during September and October meant that overall the autumnal rainfall total was well short of the 30 year average of 188mm.
Soil temperatures were also well above normal - at 30cm depth, the mean of 11.9C was 0.9 higher than average.
